Who’s taken the pestle?
Unley’s original pharmacy has lost its familiar “trademark”…the large mortar and pestle on the roof of 167 Unley Road. And nobody knows why, when and who is responsible.
Now FOCUS, the Friends of the City of Unley Society, want it back, or a replica installed on the heritage-listed building. And the organisation wants Councillors to carefully reconsider the proposed deletion of the building from the Local Heritage Places Development Plan Amendment.
FOCUS says that the building at 167/167a is an important element in the historic streetscape as it reflects the development of Unley Road as the local “High Street” and retains the original shopfront configuration.
Meanwhile the removalists remain anonymous and FOCUS is reportedly “very disturbed”, as the mortar and pestle has featured in heritage walks around the City.
If it cannot be found, the group is suggesting that a replica be commissioned…an easy task given that the Unley Museum has a detailed photograph.
