Mayor’s tunnel vision.

February 19, 2014

It only rated ten centimetres on page 8 of the Courier Messenger. Which probably says something for the whole idea…

Which is the suggestion by Unley Mayor Lachlan Clyne that the admitted traffic woes affecting Unley and Goodwood Road (Fullarton Road didn’t rate a mention) could be solved by the construction of a tunnel from Tonsley to the city centre.

Mayor Clyne wasn’t even a twinkle in dad Robert’s eye when somewhat similar grandiose plans for dramatic solutions to the metropolitan motor mess were mooted back in the Sixties by the then Liberal Government — overseen by someone called Sir Thomas Playford. Successive governments refused to grasp the nettle and piece by huge piece the magic wand disintegrated until, in 1983,  the then premier oversaw the sell– off of the remaining MATS land. MATS? “Metropolitan Adelaide Transport System”.

While it would be nice to think that eventually something will happen to solve the motorised mess we now have, the mind boggles at the prospect of commuters disappearing at the southern end of South Road, only to reappear into sunlight at some undefined spot in Mayor Stephen Yarwood’s  “vibrant” city.

Which brings me neatly to the whole crux of Unley’s commuter woes, which the aforementioned pipedream seeks to solve.

What is desperately need is a comprehensive park- and- ride system, which works so well in a number of Britain’s cities  I have visited recently. Or do  what Singapore does so brilliantly. If you really want to motor in to your place of work there it is hugely expensive, with the result that the city is a joy to wander through.

Meanwhile. A tunnel? No way.

Read my lips. It may spell vibrancy for the CBD .  To me, it is a self-centred, self-interested growth-at-all-costs greed that ignores the well-being of  those  suburbs on the outer edge of the parklands.

The Mayor’s ideas seem to be getting bigger and bolder.
    He is a true visionary.
I hope that the rest of Council will get behind him on the tunnel proposal.

    Fantastic idea.
It will generate a lot of jobs for many years.
People won’t have to fly out to the mines. Now that can commute to Unley and go underground.

    Just love the idea.
Would be good to get rid of those cars from the south.
