Christmas in May in Unley.

May 21, 2014

It’s that time of year again, when Santa Claus makes an unseasonable stop at Unley Road  to unload a sack of goodies to local organisations.

When Unley Council sits next Monday evening, Councillors will be asked to endorse a programme of financial support to a wide variety of organisations which add so much to the fabric of the city.

In a list of pressies totally  a value of  $3o,364 for community groups and $9940  for festivals and events,  there are proposed awards of $4000  or so  each to the Goody Patch community garden, Sustainable Communities AS (Unley Group) and the St John Ambulance organisation, $3000 each to Urban Myth and OzHarvest Ltd, $2000-plus each to the Broughton  Art Society, Unley United Soccer Club, and the Unley Park  Lawn Tennis Club, $1500 to the Unley Park Bowling Club, and $1800 to Goodwood Community Services.

In the festival and arts section  Goodwood Central Traders and Services,  the Alliance Francaise of Adelaide, and the Unley Road Association will each benefit by approximately $2,000 if the committee recommendation is endorsed.

Meanwhile, without wanting to be the Christmas Grinch, I have suggested that we need to tighten up even more on the criteria for applications, and tackle the problem of perennial pleas from certain organisations
