Unley’s rates rise is State’s lowest!

May 26, 2014

Despite all the protestations of some Members (or at least one) that Unley Council should link its annual rates rises with the Consumer Price Index, figures released by The Advertiser  today in a predictable front page rant (which “Grumpy predicted a couple of weeks ago) , show that Unley has recorded the LOWEST total  percentage rise over ten years!!!

Even then, however, The Advertiser  could STILL not get its facts right. Alongside a chart which shows that our percentage of 55.2 percent was almost two  and a half percent below our nearest “competitor” –Port Adelaide Enfield– it was that council which was given the credit…Elsewhere the figures are much higher, with Playford topping the bill at 122.72percent

Meanwhile the whole slanted diatribe against the State’s councils was short on logic and long on ill-founded criticism.

The usual suspects have been rounded up to support the newspaper’s scaremongering, with ratepayer association spokespersons  labelling the regular rate rises a “horrendous”.

For the whole sad catalogue of scaremongering , take a look at page eight of the paper, and take it all with a pinch of salt.

More later when I have simmered down!

I am sick of the bickering that comes out of Unley Council by the advocate for a rate increase of 3.8% when other Councils have rises of 5-10%.
I believe that Unley’s proposed rate increase of about 5% is reasonable.
It is reasonable because of the quality of services that I expect from my Council.

Ah, the sound of reason. But, sorry, you will not get the persistent perpetrator to see that!!!

I also do not want the Council services to be slashed (by $400k) for the sake of adhering to CPI. the net result is an extra $7 rate increase for residents. That’s just 2 coffees.
    Ian is spot on.
I wish that the Councillor proposing the slash and burn would come online so that we could hear the rationale.

Perhaps you should contact Councillor Michael Hewitson, the representative for Unley Ward. He is on 82741394
      or at mhewitson@em.unley.sa.gov. au.
      Good luck.
