Goodwood rail path’s $80,000 danger bill

June 6, 2014

“Significant” deterioration of the footpath alongside the rail  bridge across Goodwood Road has escalated to a point where some parts have dropped concrete pieces onto the road below, foreshadowing a possible road closure.

AND THERE IS EVEN MORE BAD NEWS. Many more parts are showing signs of imminent failure, with the repair bill anticipated to reach $80,000. Just who will bear the cost is being discussed.

Meanwhile  urgent talks  have been held between Unley Council and the Department of Transport to investigate the replacement of the current concrete slabs with either concrete or a recycled plastic  board-walk product. And urgent talks are taking place with DPTI to determine whether work can occur above Goodwood Road (day or night) and what degree of road closure would be acceptable throughout the works.

“Council staff recognise the importance of the walkway and we are moving as fast as possible”, Unley Council’s Property Assets Manager Mr Alan Johns said today.

    A rather unfortunate development.
Not so long ago we were told by Government engineers that the subway structure was in good health given its age of 100 years.
I am hopeful that a solution can be engineered and be in place in time for the opening of the Millswood train station.
