Antarctic destination hots up.

June 21, 2014

PenguinsTwenty years ago, the frozen wastes attracted fewer than 500o tourists a year

Today that figure is up to 40,000…and rising. That may be a healthy climate for tourist operators, but scientists are worried that the growing human tide could spell disaster.

It’s a sad truth that the bucket list for many  now includes the south polar regions, and, like other venues around the world,  tourist operators will eventually kill the penguins that are laying the golden eggs.

As a journalist I always refused , with one exception, to be guilty of sharing my hidden secrets (tautology) and that was Bhutan, which still sensibly makes it financially and physically difficult to destroy its centuries old culture.

Australia is one of 30 nations who have Antarctic bases, and it would be nice to think that this country  could lead the way to keeping visitors to a controllable number.
