Petanque. Pernod. Parklands…..Paradise.

July 24, 2014

petanque playerA “comment” to Grumpy from former radio identity … and fellow petanque enthusiast … Judith Brown has prompted me to give another plug for the highly social and laid-back past-time.

When I returned to Adelaide many moons ago after  a brief sojourn in the south of England, the first thing I discovered was that the game I had played with visitors  from across the English Channel was alive and well  in our very own south parklands.

XXX  number of years later and I still pass many a lazy Sunday sipping pernod and aiming to throw three  600grams or so of steel as close as possible to a little pig approximately nine metres away across the gravel piste (ground) on the corner of  Unley and Greenhill Roads. And that, in a Gallic nutshell, is the entire description of the game played around the world.,

Our  club was the first in Australia, (born 1977)and has spawned at least a dozen other clubs in the State.  Not only do we travel interstate, but I have been in teams that   visited Singapore for the Asian championships, and Noumea for the Pacific Games. I try to forget the latter, where three very large ladies from one of the islands took the occasional minute or two off to interrupt their smoking and drinking and beat us by the narrow margin of 13-nil…

We look forward to seeing you sometime soon.
