Honouring “Unley’s Own”

August 31, 2014

May next year marks the centenary of the departure on many Unley residents to serve in Gallipoli and France. Three months earlier the 27th Battalion, later to be known proudly as “Unley’s Own”, had been formed and undergone training in Mitcham, the main training camp of the time.

The first commanding officer of the battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Walter Dollman was also the Mayor of Unley.

Now Unley Council has already started planning to mark the centenary of World War One, and will be advertising for descendants of the 27th through Facebook, the local press, and RSA and Army contacts, inviting them to be involved in retracing the steps of their ancestors.

On May 8th 1915 the soldiers paraded down Unley Road and two days later Lt Col Dollman farewelled them at an event at the town hall.

Exact details of the recognition of these two dates will be confirmed in the new year, hopefully involving the existing l0th/27th battalion,MPs and the grandsons of Lt.Col Dollman..
