Empty auctions

November 14, 2014

It’s yet another step towards the days when the only  person present at an arts,  goods or chattels auction could well be the person bringing down the gavel…

All ready things are moving that way, with often as few as a dozen would-be buyers present in auction houses around town, while their invisible opposition sit  in the comfort of their home having sussed out the potential resale prices on the internet and worked out their optimum bid…

Latest auction house to adopt and actively promote the idea is Unley’s own Small and Whitfield business on Unley Road, where once its showrooms were packed with would-be bidders. Now the firm is pushing its ” Internet Live Sales” for your ease and comfort.

Inevitable, of course. But also sad. Missing will be the interaction of the gavel man’s urging of an upward price spiral and his audience’s repartee.
