Unley Oval gets a new title.

January 13, 2015

Farewell to “Envestra Park”. Welcome to “Peter Motley Park”.

With the change of name from sponsor Envestra Limited to Australian Gas Networks, comes the news that (for SANFL purposes) Unley Oval will now be renamed in recognition of the illustrious but sadly short career of Peter Motley.

images (9)The name change was announced today, several weeks after “Grumpy” inadvertently broke the news prematurely for a couple of days. Which is why some of you may be wondering why you are reading a “repeat”!

To recap on the vanished “blog”, Peter Was destined for a great career, having played 92 league games for Sturt between 1982 and 1985. He won the club’s best and fairest in 1984 and 1985 before joining Carlton in the VFL, where he played 19 senior matches in 1986-7, He also played six games for SA including winning the Foss Williams medal in 1985. He was named an All-Australian the same year and went on to make Sturt’s Team of the Century.

Sadly, as someone who had been hailed in the media as “a millionaire footballer in the offing”, his footy career was cut short following a serious car crash at the age of just 22.

I have NO idea who or what Mr Williams is, so it’s not surprising that I got his Christian name wrong. My apologies, but at least I posted something positive about Sturt. You should be so lucky! Carn the Wallabies!!!!!!!!!

ENOUGH ALREADY! Peter Whatshisface was someone that had the ability to kick a bag of wind around the place. Unley Oval is for the Unley residents, not the sole domain of Sturt Football Club and SANFL. It was built as Unley Oval and will always be Unley Oval. Let SFC dedicate a bar or a change room for remembrance, not the whole bloody oval.

If it is to be named then it should be someone that made a significant contribution to society. I’d prefer Grumpy’s Ground over some coulda, woulda, didn’t windbag kicker.

Ian, wash your mouth out and show a bit of respect.
You don’t have to be rude and disrespectful.
You don’t sound like a nice person.
Sturt could not have come up with a better person to name the oval after.
FYI the name used by Sturt is only used in the SANFL circles.
The public will always know it as Unley Oval.
Why don’t you be brave, be a man and use your full name.

Let’s not get personal, fellers. After all, it IS just when the footy season is on.

I agree with Trevor on this.
The personal comments by Ian S are hurtful.

It’s only a renaming for football purposes, isn’t and can’t be more encompassing than that. It’s still Unley Oval, and you won’t hear the ABC utter any commercial name to describe it! I’m happy enough that it’s recognition for a fine player and person cut down early in his career. I thought the sentiments expressed from one quarter were harsh and nonsensical, but, as the French would say, so be it.

FWIW I don’t hold anything against any player of any game. Trevor and Georgie, thousands of people die or are injured in car crashes every day of the year. It is tragic for this to occur and especially tragic for someone so young, regardless if they were a member of your beloved sports club. If Peter has given a lot to the game then I will rescind my comment regarding contribution. As long as Unley Oval stays as Unley Oval and the picket fence is not the thin edge of the wedge then that’s ok too.
