Seven-storey flats for Unley Road?

January 21, 2015

A multi-million-dollar, seven-storey block of shops, flats and luxury apartments could  tower over the central sector of Unley Road, opposite the Cremorne Hotel.

Unley Councillors got their first glimpse of the future of Unley Road when  Norwood-based consulting architects Cheeseman presented detailed plans of the project to Members on Monday evening.

The development, which Grumpy understands is owned a Chinese consortium, is planned for the western section of Unley’s main thoroughfare between Opey Avenue and Hart Street, currently occupied by a single-storey group of mixed business .

Below street level would be two floors of parking spaces for 200 cars. The ground level would contain a mixture of  single bedroom accommodation and commercial premises. The levels above would contain a total of 122 flats, with  penthouses on the top level.

Grumpy has been told that there would be no start on construction for two years, and it would another year before the complex is completed.

Plans of the proposal are on display at the Unley Civic Centre, and representatives will be available for discussion and information every Tuesday and Thursday between 3.00 p.m. and 4.30.

Meanwhile local MP Mr David Pisoni has letterboxed all surrounding properties.

Unley road is ok but high density developments ideally should go next to and around mass transit terminals … So in the Unley area that is Goodwood road near the tram and train station. It is still great to see the Unley council being progressive.

I would be interested to know Mr Pisoni’s views up front.
Is he for or against it?
To make this work the public transport on Unley Road needs attention.
