Hero of Petrel Cove.

March 13, 2015

You may have missed it, as the story was tucked away at the back of the “Advertiser” news section on page 28.

But I hope that someone in authority spotted it, and has set the necessary wheels in motion to reward the bravery of the main character in the drowning drama at dangerous Petrel Cove  on the Fleurieu Peninsula last year.

Luke Ashman had just finished a two-hour surfing stint on April 28 when he noticed a “commotion”, as he described it to the inquest, on nearby rocks. He quickly braved the dangerous surf and tried unsuccessfully to save 19-year-old Kamran Bimal Gujari and another swimmer, Thomas Craven.

The rip was too strong, however, and  Mr Gujari slipped out of his grasp.   A helicopter later winched Luke to safety from the rocks where he had sought refuge after finding it too difficult to reach the shore.

Mr Craven survived.

End of story? I hope not.
