World record for Goodwood?

April 24, 2015

SIXTYTWO years’ service on a sporting club’s management committee!

Is there anyone out there who can beat that record? If so, “Grumpy” would love to hear from you.

If not, the winner is…Colin Wilson, stalwart of the Goodwood Saints Football Club.

When Unley Council meets on Monday evening, item 101 on its agenda is a recommendation that Colin’s unbroken term of service for his beloved club  be commemorated by the naming of the grandstand at Goodwood Oval in his honour.

And how do you get to top sixty year’s unbroken service?

Like Colin , you need to start out at the tender age of 14 and a year later,(in 1949 in his case) be  elected to the management committee and appointed  manager of the Grade A team.

Since then he has continued to hold a volunteer position on the committee and has worked tirelessly, particularly through some difficult times.

After retiring from work in 1995, Colin has worked as the volunteer manager of the club, a post that occupies 30 hours a week during the football season and 20 hours a week in the off-season.

In 1997 the City of Unley recognised his contribution to the city by presenting him with its “Service to Community” award for his remarkable  half -century of  service to his beloved “Saints”.

A further greatly deserved  honour came his way in 2004 when the Australian Football League successfully nominated him  for the Order of Australia Medal.
