Highway to jazz heaven…

May 20, 2015

She’s built close to the ground. But what she lacks in stature she makes up for with a voice that soars.

I’m talking about the lady from New Orleans. Marilyn Keller. The lady with the voice made for jazz. And the lady who wowed and wrapped the audience around her little finger at the Highway Inn last night as the special (very special) guest attraction of the regular Tuesday night session of  the Southern Jazz Club.

Audience participation isn’t exactly a regular feature of the evenings, but the house-full gathering broke the drought, especially with a full-throttle version of   that “Hi-de-hi, Hi-de-ho” classic that brought the house down in my all-time film favourite “The Blues Brothers”.

OK, so I keep banging on about Tuesday nights, but it’s my belief that it’s the place to get the very best of Australian jazz. And last night was no exception. Bill Polain on trombone. Lyndon Gray on bass. Leader John Hunt on reeds. Drummer Kevin van der Zwaq. And the incredible keyboard wizardry of Jason Hammond.

End of commercial…
