Unley Oval’s financial black hole deepens

July 23, 2015

Oh, to be a consultant!

In answer to a number of questions which “Grumpy” posed to Unley Council Administration this month, I can reveal that, even before a  brick has been laid or a pot of paint has been splashed around, the bill for the master plan for Peter Motley Oval (aka Unley Oval) has already topped $100,000.

The firm of One Eighty SLS billed Council $21,200 for a master plan, while Mott MacDonald charged $38,445 for Unley Oval Upgrade Options and a further $41,25o for “grandstand design options”. OK, so it’s small beer compared with the $8million-plus that is the estimated cost of the preferred option, but it’s still a hefty pile of dollars..

When it comes to the question  of involving the public in the whole issue, the report to Council points  out that it would cost a basic $20,000 for a mail-out to ratepayers, plus extra for  reply-paid envelopes and A3 plans. Not cheap. But it will be those very same recipients who will have to fork out a fistful of dollars if the whole pipe-dream materialises. And it is their democratic right to voice an opinion…in the hope that it will be considered.

    Mike
There must be broad consultation, N-S-E-W, city wide, not just those living in the oval precinct. The residents of Goodwood, Wayville, Forestville and Everard Park need their equal say.
That said, I support the consultation via the community centres, libraries, shopping centres and online. The cost of $20k – $30k for postal delivery is not warranted.
By the way, Unley Oval is only known as Peter Motley Oval on days of a footy match. It’s a term only used by SANFL and Sturt Football Club; not by Council and the community.
