Brown Hill Creek mail-in

August 28, 2015

The wording varies just slightly, but in the past couple of day there has been more than a trickle of  repetitive emails on “Grumpy’s” screen seeking my vote on the solution to the spectre of a one- in- one- hundred year flood sweeping through the suburbs along the banks of the Brown Hill Creek. …including of course, Unley.

If any more  of this web-site’s followers are anti-dam proponents, perhaps I can save everyone’s time by laying my cards squarely on the table. And my apologies if we are on opposite banks of the creek.

Firstly. As a representative of Unley residents, I  believe that the “upgrading” of the creek through our suburbs will be detrimental and a lot more costly than the figure quoted as the least expensive, once you factor in the probable claims for compensation from householders affected by the scouring.

Secondly. It is nonsense to speed up the sending of  precious water sweeping out to sea. If anything, we should be looking at ways of harvesting rather than hastening.

Thirdly. I have concerns about the spurious “facts” used by some to oppose the creation of an upstream dam.  It would not, I believe, have the dramatic ecological consequences prophesied by some.

Fourthly.   And most  importantly,   I have undertaken a straw poll among my fellow councillors and would be more than somewhat surprised if I finished up among the minority when it comes to a vote in the next few weeks.

It certainly offers the best outcome for Unley.

there is strong sentiment in the Unley community for a dam.
It does offer the best outcome with least disruption.
