Magarey Medal’s Cumberland gap.

September 9, 2015

Somewhere out there in an Adelaide suburb…possibly Unley…is a small but valuable piece of metal  dating back to1911.

It’s a missing part of  SANFL history, and one of seven medals that have so far eluded the custodians of the league’s history. It’s the Magarey medal won by Sturt’s Vic Cumberland.

The league’s history committee, headed by Chris Halbert, wife of Sturt champion John Halbert, has been trying to track down the missing medals awarded before 1991 so they can be photographed and included in an electronic history book.

The other medals that have gone bush are those won by  Port Adelaide’s Stan Malin (1899), West Adelaide’s James Tierney (1908) and Robert Barnes (1922),  West Torrens’ Dave Low (1912), Magpie Jack Ashley (1914)  and Adelaide’s Frank Barry (1915).
