Hard times for hard cash

December 28, 2015

Unfortunately for those of us who deal in paper money, “Advertiser”  columnist Rex Jory is right ON the money when he predicts that the days of dollar coins and notes are numbered.

As someone who has held out against the plastic tsunami, today’s “Opinion” page forecast that coins and dollar notes will virtually disappear in  the next five years is a cash-tastrophy.

I have just five pieces of plastic in my wallet. One  gives me free bus and train  rides. The second provides me with free drinks and parking  at the casino. The third delivers notes from a hole in the wall.  The fourth provides entry to the Members’ room at Unley’s City Hall. An d the fifth is my driving licence.

According to Rex, unless I add a mobile phone to my possessions (something which I  have studiously avoided), life from me and fellow Grumpyites will become impossible.

Sadly he is right  when he says that “People who today carry wallets an d purses stuffed with banknotes will become dinosaurs in the High Street”.

Mike, I can reduce the plastic you carry by 20%.
By law you don’t have to carry your driver’s licence.
I never do, unless travelling or needing ID.
If you get pulled over by the Police, you’re obliged to present your licence at any Police Station in the State within 24 hours.

Well this is bad news. I like dealing in cash, it’s so much easier to keep track of the spending. When you open your wallet/purse and see nothing, you stay home instead of going to the shops. Most people buy far too much stuff anyway and have the credit card bills to prove it.
