Showdown on Royal Show traffic cost.

January 22, 2016

Just who should bear the cost of managing the annual vehicle avalanche which sweeps through the northern suburbs of Unley during Royal Show week?

Historically it is Council (i.e. the ratepayers) , with the bill last year coming to approximately $36,000. But in 2014 the DPTI (Department of Transport) issued new guidelines regarding traffic management for events…stating that the burden should fall on  event organisers.

Result? It is planned that the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society’s request for Council continuing to bear the burden be considered as part of Council’s 2016/17 budget deliberations.

At the heart of the debate is the fact that Council receives more than $400,000 per year in rates from the RAHS, but, in the Society’s view,  does not  provide general municipal services to the showgrounds. The Council response is that other major events  held at the showgrounds are required to organise their own traffic management.

It should be an interesting debate…
