A good tree story, by gum!

February 8, 2016

There’s a cynical saying in the world of newsgathering…make sure you don’t ask that last question, it could spoil a good story.

Take, just as an example, the saga of a Malvern landowner’s battle to kill off an 80-year-old river red gum on the building plot he had hived off from his garden. The reason? To build a house.

Wisely and thankfully the Unley Council’s development assessment panel gave the idea the thumbs down, on  the grounds that the ancient monster contributed to the character of the area and was not a danger.

The implication of all the above? That the Council administration allowed the sub-division and  the panel, which contains a number of Councillors, promptly scuttled the landowner’s plans! Left hand and right hand?

The REAL story. Modifications have been made to plans for the proposed new building that could protect the tree and possibly/probably allow everyone to be happy.

Shock. Horror. A GOOD news story.
