Unley Oval. A picture of perfection .

February 12, 2016

Car-less (that’s a sad and costly story), I trudged my way to the Unley Council offices this morning via a short-cut across Unley Oval.

Which left me wondering, bewildered, by the excuse given for its closure to the public next week. That a controversial off-limits status is required to ensure  the playing area is of a standard worthy of an AFL-sponsored game.

Bewilderment.

Thanks to the sterling efforts of Unley Council’s open=space maintenance brigade the vast expanse of immaculate turf is only a millimetre or two above bowling green standard. I could not find one instance of a pothole or bare patch. The goal posts are down and being painted. The various white lines are in pristine condition.

All of which poses the crucial question. Why seriously alienate regular users of the area when  all that would seem to be necessary is a last-minute tidy-up on Sunday morning?

It’s not too difficult  to defuse what is a potentially flawed public-relations exercise…

Have you ever seen it looking better Grumpy? well done to Howley and co, possibly with some outside input. I know the AFL insist on moisture readings etc to ensure the turf is ‘acceptable’ for the professional footballer. When the true guardians in Double Blue return (I believe they are in training ‘exile’ not dissimilar to residents from Monday) they will be playing on a quality surface.

Right on!! A perfect picture, and a wonderful tribute to Mr Howley and his lads for such a great job. Such a pity that we are losing his expertise through his imminent retirement. Unley has been the envy of all other councils for a loooong time.

Perhaps Council in their wisdom have determined that the usual irresponsible dog owners whose canine’s use Unley Oval daily as a toilet, and usually while their owners stand in a circle chatting with their backs facing their dog can’t be trusted to keep the Oval in its current magnificent condition.

Note to Oval users – 1. Unley Oval is not a manicured toilet for their dog & 2. Dog owners need to keep a visual on their dog at all times. 3. if they aren’t keeping a visual on their dog at all times then how do they know where their dog has deficated.
