Nepal earthquake aid scandal

Rice donated by surrounding countries is allegedly rotting and insect-infected in warehouses in Nepal’s capital of Kathmandu…and now it has been revealed that the remaining useable foodstuff will not be freely distributed, but will be sold.

Meanwhile outlying settlements are still suffering badly a nearly a year after the massive earthquake which killed tens of thousands of villagers, mainly in almost inaccessible areas. Not only from hunger, but from lack of suitable shelter to survive the monsoon season, which is contributing to a spike in mental problems for many.

Despite all this, some tourist agencies (Australian included) are turning a callous blind eye to the tragic situation and encouraging holiday-makers to head for the Himalayan country, using up desperately short supplies of food and fuel…
