Adelaide Oval abduction memories.

Is it REALLY 43 years ago since Kirste Gordon and Joanne Ratcliffe disappeared
without trace from Adelaide Oval?

For “Grumpy” the memory is as fresh as if it were yesterday.

The reason? On the day of the disappearance of the two girls — August 25, 1973 — I was, as the second most senior Sunday Mail journalist, on duty while editor Geoff Jones took a well-earned afternoon tea-break.

When alerted to the situation, he decided to wait until more confirmation of the situation was provided by the police, and the mid-afternoon edition went to press for distribution around the State without any reference to the event.

When the final alarm bells went off from police headquarters all hell broke loose and we found ourselves writing the first chapter in a mystery story that is still baffling the authorities four decades on…
