“Blanket” treasure honoured.

June 13, 2016

OK.. So I admit it.

I  am merely basking in reflected glory.

But it’s not every day that one’s favourite girlfriend is honoured with membership of the Order of Australia.

Explanation?

Today’s page 14. of The Advertiser features a large photograph of  102-year-old Helen  Caterer,  ex-journalist, and  the lady responsible for the rescue, revival and running of one of South Australia’s best-known institutions, the  Sunday Mail Blanket Appeal.. And someone who I worked with for almost a decade as that newspaper’s assistant  editor.

Until a year or so ago, Helen was a resident of an ECH complex in  Unley, but failing eyesight forced her to relinquish her independence….and the honorary title of “The Lady Who Lunches”…and move to an aged-care complex in  Walkerville.

Not that the change has put an end to her socializing, with outings for country drives and social gatherings.

Congratulations, dear Helen. And thank you for putting  up with my driving!
