Nine storeys on George St.?

June 18, 2016

That large vacant block on the corner of Greenhill Road and Unley’s George Street is destined for a nine-storey residential tower.

Proposals for the vacant block to the rear of the historic Carramar mansion went on show at an information day today organized by the developers’ project team and attended by a large number of interested neighbours.

Central to the success of the proposal will be the retention of the mansion, which will be returned to its 1918 profile with the removal of those  unsightly cast-iron fire escapes and red=brick additions over the past century.

That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is the concern some local residents I spoke to have over the looooong shadow thrown by the apartments, and the possible (read definite) problems the many residents will have in entry and access from George Street, notorious for its extended morning and evening rush hours.

Meanwhile the developers are anxious to meet a 2018 deadline for completion…

With those large blocks of three-storey flats on the market just a short distance to the south on George Street, the thoroughfare could be in for some interesting times…
