Local Government Association bailout

June 30, 2016

I’ve lost count of the number of times  I have expressed the view that the Local Government Association is an expensive, ineffectual  and unnecessary body. And that Unley Council should pull the plug.

So it comes as a pleasant surprise to read on page 13 of today’s “Advertiser” that Salisbury Council seriously considering following in  the very recent footsteps of Marion Council  and abandoning the association.

Salisbury Councillor Brad Vermeer has pulled no punches in  his pull-out campaign, blasting the LGA as “a bloated bureaucratic gravy train”.

Marion Council will save $93,000 by cancelling its membership, and Unley would not be far off that figure if it followed suit.

I believe discussions on  an exit plan should be on  Unley’s calendar sooner rather than later.

If Unley pulled out of the LGA then Mayor Lachlan Clyne would lose his lucrative paid jobs on LGA boards. He won’t support this.
