Shrinking Councils

November 29, 2016

As a non-combatant in the 2018 round of Council elections, I will watch with interest how little old Unley handles the need (under the Local Government Act) of a review  of its number of councillors.

The requirement applies to any Council which has 12 or more Members .

Meanwhile a consultant’s report on Norwood, Payneham and St Peter’s Council, which has 13 councillors and a mayor (one councillor more than Unley), has put forward six options for the next council term, which would see a scrapping of four  councillor positions and a merger of two wards. It’s a move which would save ratepayers $63,000-plus.

It will be the second time in 10 years that NPST has shrunk with the 2009 review seeing the disappearance of two elected members and one ward.
