Unley’s central confusion

December 9, 2016

There were placards. There were interjections. There was widespread applause. And there were 100 or so local residents crammed into the Unley Council chamber.

This week’s public meeting…held so that  residents could vent their spleen over the controversial revamp  suggested for the highrise (and not so high) transformation for an area  stretching from the city’s  treasured “village green” to the western edge of the Unley shopping centre…drew one of the biggest audiences  I have seen on my long, long service as a councillor.

While over 8opercent of the almost 300 responses received by Council were implacably opposed to a project that would see alterations to the village green (bounded by Edmund Avenue, Rugby Street and Oxford Terrace), the large majority of those dissidents also expressed dismay at the idea of anything up to eleven storeys on the site of the Unley Shopping Centre.

As someone who shares most of the dismay displayed, I believe that 11- storey shadow-makers is way too high. And any moves to impact upon the village green should be given the shove.

Sure, the “stack em and pack em” approach to the centre of Unley would go some way to meeting the State Government’s idea that Unley should contribute 5000 (or is it 10,000?)more people towards a larger Adelaide.

BUT AS I HAVE SAID ON A NUMBER OF PUBLIC OCCASIONS, WHY AREN’T WE LOOKING AT ENCOURAGING  (VERY)   HIGHRISE PLANS FOR THE LE CORNU SITE?.

And won’t the 10-storey plans for Greenhill Road  also go a long way towards Labor’s target?

Watch this space for further developments, if you see what I mean.

Have they seen the peak hour traffic on Unley Road? Are they mad?

It was a night of strong protest by the Unley (central) community.
Now Council needs to consider all of the community feedback.

It was the night of the long face based on a few photos I have seen!
Perhaps Kev Foley is in charge of planning? the rack ’em, pack ’em and stack ’em approach doesn’t suit Unley…
