“Tour Down Under” troubles

July 10, 2017

Prompted by news that Unley has won the privilege(?) of hosting the second stage of next year’s  Tour Down Under cycling extravaganza…I use the word advisedly, given that   our ratepayers are shelling out $200,000-plus for the  honour…I wandered down the retail strip at the weekend.

Not a very uplifting journey, as I counted 24 empty commercial  premises. Which is more than somewhat disappointing, given  that the latest handout will take Unley’s cycling support to WELL over $2,000,000 since the pedallers first came to town.

Mike, we’re on the same page on this issue.
It’s a quarter million $ expense that the residents of Unley can no longer afford; year in and year out.
Only you and I opposed this during the recent debate on endorsing the 17/18 Council budget.
All we are doing now is adding $266k to the debt every year. Funded by unnecessary increases in rates.

It staggers me that Unley Council continues to spend $250,000 on this street party.
Most people I talk to agree that it must stop.
The further away from King William Road that people live, the less the likelihood that they will attend.
    It’s time to move on.
If you must have it then get the local traders to fund it.
Stop hitting me with rate rises.
