Dardanelles bombshell.

September 30, 2017

In all the public hooha concerning the hijacking of the unique  south parklands Dardanelles Cenotaph to the Memorial Walk on Kintore Avenue, it must be  SOMEWHAT embarrassing for Adelaide City Council, which has endorsed the transfer, to  have it made public that in a letter to its CEO on August 23, 2013, Bill Denny AM, then director Veterans Affairs SA and Chair of  the ANZAC Day Commemoration Council, suggested that the Council consider the return of the  Cenotaph to its original position on Sir Lewis Cohen Avenue and the  re-establishment of the surrounding Wattle Grove in the South Parklands to  its original state!!!!

In his letter, Mr Denny said that it was “quite special”that the Cenotaph was the first of its type in the nation and helped the mothers of South Australia to come to grips with the loss of their loved ones.

“The restoration of Wattle Grove and the re-placing of the Dardanelles Cenotaph would send a truly important message that combines sacrifice with the folly and immense grief associated with warfare.

“This project has the support of Veterans SA and the Anzac Day Commemoration Council”.

Over to you, Adelaide City Council…

P.s.In his letter of August 23, 2013,  to Council’s CEO Mr Peter Smith, Mr Denny reveals that he had had  a meeting with the Deputy Lord Mayor, Mr Michael Llewellyn-Smith and during discussion suggested that Veterans Affairs had an ANZAC Centenary project that might interest Adelaide City Council.

“My proposal (re the restoration of the Dardanelles Cenotaph) was well received and it was suggested that I write to you”.
