Wally the Major and an amazing WW1 coincidence.

October 19, 2017

For the past month or so (the wheels in legal-land grind awful slow) Grumpy has been embroiled in a  tussle involving acknowledgement of the casualties sustained by South Australian troops in the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War..

Aspersions of a serious  nature have been cast over my  alleged attitude towards the military world, which I have responded to by revealing my four-generation involvement  with the British Army.

This morning, out of the blue, I received a telephone call from an Unley picture framing business, revealing that they had come across a long-lost Grumpy family treasure…a British War Office document which I had left with them for framing more than 30 years ago. It  announces that, in the First World War , Major Walter Sidney  Howe,  my maternal grandfather, had  been “Mentioned in Dispatches”….the next most important thing to a medal!!!
