Light Horse larrikinism

October 29, 2017

I know. I know. Like me, you’ve probably heard the story before.

But with the centenary of the (crazy) charge of the Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba just round the corner in Canberra , it’s timely to be reminded of the bloody-minded madness of those sword-wielding riders who swept to victory through a murderous hail of  machinegun fire.

Today’s page-25 recollection in the Sunday Mail is prompted by the news that the flag which flew proudly above the Beersheba Post Office in Palestine  after the world’s last great cavalry charge is to be the centre of attention  in Canberra on Tuesday…courtesy of the grandson of  22-year-old Trooper  Alfred Johnson, who “souvenired ” it for his parents’ pub.
