Myanmar? Give it a miss…

January 8, 2018

Forget all those full-colour, full-page advertisements, folks. Forget the alluring television commercials. Scenic it maybe. But safe? No way.

Burma, as it once was 20 years ago or so  when Grumpy solo-ed up by bus to Mandalay to see the river dolphins cavorting in the Irrawaddy, is still a disaster zone and only destined to get worse.

Then, as now, the problem lies with the Rohingya community, which is at armed loggerheads with the government over what the United Nations has called ethnic cleansing.

And which has seen 650,000 villagers from the north fleeing to neighbouring Bangalesh.

I may be old-fashioned, but I think it is dangerously irresponsible to promote the country as a tourist destination when it is a powder-keg waiting to explode.
