Chris Barber’s bomb memories.

Listening to some vinyl memories today of my favourite British jazzman , it struck me how much things have changed (for the dreadful worse) since his “Great Re-union” concert way back in the mid-Seventies.

Almost 42 years to the day before the tragic massacre in Manchester. The date. June 5th 1975. The venue. Fairfield Hall, London. The occasion. The  Barber band’s “Great Re-union concert”.

Halfway through proceedings comes a bomb warning.

The 2000 concert- goers exit calmly to the car park. The band follows, and provides an impromptu open-air concert. Not long afterwards the Police Chief announces the all-clear and tells the musicians:” Thank you.. You can lead them all back in again now”.
